Have grease zirk, will use it…RESPONSIBLY!

Grease is a wonderful thing in the age of industrial technology. However, you know how the saying goes, “too much of a good thing....” Grease serves an essential purpose in the bearings of Barco’s rotary unions, providing lubrication, corrosion protection, and protection from water ingress. But, too much grease causes bad things to happen. Most importantly, it can cause premature failure of the bearings, and thus the union, resulting in costly downtime to you and your customers, and additional cost for replacement unions. Technically speaking, too much grease increases the internal friction of the bearings, thereby causing the bearings to run hotter than they should. Pushing too much grease in the bearings can also cause the grease seals to pop out, allowing the grease to escape from the bearing area. This creates two problems. First, it leaves insufficient lubrication for the bearings, decreasing their life. Secondly, the grease can collect at the seal faces and cause leakage in some application.

During assembly the bearings are sufficiently greased to last the lifetime of a typical E-75 RS operating in water applications under 150ºF (65ºC). This covers a majority of the applications into which an E-75 RS will go. In higher temperature applications, however, more frequent greasing is necessary. Barco’s recommendations are as follows:

Temperature Re-Greasing Frequency
150ºF (65ºC) to 300ºF (149ºC) Monthly
300ºF (149ºC) to 350ºF (177ºC) Weekly

Do not over-grease.

Barco’s standard grease is Mobilith ® AW2. It provides excellent resistance to water and protection against rust and corrosion. Barco helps customers to understand proper greasing procedures and reduce the possibility of over-greasing by supplying the E-75 RS unions with a plug in the grease hole. A label is attached to the plug with Barco’s recommended re-greasing frequency. A separate grease fitting will be attached to the label in the event that re-greasing is required.
